When the British ruled India, they had their laws imposed on us. After we got our independence on 15th August 1947, we started drafting our laws and they became effective on 26th January 1950 marking our republic day. Republic is a form of government in which a state is ruled by representatives elected by the citizens of the country. If they want to know more, here you go! Republic day activity for preschoolers
Kids are curious by nature. But during the preschool age (2.5-4 years), they will be even more inquisitive and full of energy to learn new things. They are indeed like wet clay that you could mould into any shape you want to! So whatever skills or knowledge you infuse into them during this age, will stick with them forever! I wanted my kid to be a responsible and patriotic citizen who values the freedom we are bestowed with and the duties we have to value them. Republic day activity for preschoolers is what I would love to share with you for you and your kid to have fun!
1. DIY National Flags
Though national flags are readily available in different sizes and materials in almost all the stationeries, it is fun to help kids to make their flags! By habit, my kid used to save the ice cream sticks for crafts work whenever we eat ice cream. With those ice cream sticks, we painted them with saffron, white with blue chakra in the middle and green to make her an attractive national flag! All that you would need is 4 ice cream sticks to make a pole and our beautiful tricolour flag. Not only do you teach patriotism with this, but you also help your kid to make wealth out of waste!
2. My Favourite Leader
Even if we are not purposefully teaching, kids learn a lot from us. They observe us and make an idea of their own. When you tell them about our nation’s history and important days, they understand the efforts put in by our leaders and have a leader as their idol or role model. We, living in a gated community, conduct events and competitions for kids on Republic Day. In which, elocution competition will be a mandatory republic day activity for preschoolers. Kids speak about their favorite leaders under the topic, ‘My favorite Leader’ which makes the day wholesome and inspiring!

So I decided to make her interested in celebrating republic day using the things she loves! Here are a few interesting ideas that I’ve tried with my kid. The simplest of the ideas is to take printouts of national emblems and symbols and make your kids color them up.
Another thing to try is Impression art – You could guide your kid to make thumb impressions to make funny little figurines like peacocks and lotus. Paint their index, middle and ring fingers with saffron, white and green to make impressions on sheets as Indian flags! Play areas can be one of the ways to ease your burden, where you could let your kids play until they are tired and you could have some time for yourself as well. 4. Fancy Dress up
This is an interesting as well as fun-filled republic day activity for kindergarten kids! Most schools conduct fancy dress competitions in the event of a republic day. Either you could get your kid to participate in it or you could just dress them up as their favorite leaders for the sake of fun. You could also ask your kid to give a little speech matching their dress up and post it on social media to spread nationalism and patriotism.
5. Drama time
With this republic day activity for kindergarten kids, you could now awaken that hidden actor in your kids. They could be the soft and nonviolent Gandhiji or the valiant and brave Subash Chandra Bose or the sharp and enigmatic Sarojini Naidu and flaunt their acting skills! Drama/play is one of the effective means to engrave great values into the hearts of kids. Try this fun-filled activity with your kids to teach them the importance and value of being a republic nation.
6. Stories from the Past
Last, but not least. Listening to the stories about our nation and its history is another republic day activity for kindergarten kids. Stories play a significant role in passing on the culture and emotions to the next generation. India is a land of stories rich in culture, heritage and moral values. I often tell my kid about the times when India and Pakistan were together before the partition to teach her the idea of secularism.
As a parent, it is our responsibility to bring up our children with a sound sense of morals, tolerance and empathy. Significant national holidays like these give us a chance to be better parents by helping our kids to respect different religions, languages and cultures!
